Guayusa vs Coffee: Why I Made the Switch (And Never Looked Back)
Share
For years, my mornings started with coffee. Then I discovered Guayusa — a naturally caffeinated leaf from Ecuador with a smooth flavour and a completely different story behind it.
Coffee is loved around the world for good reason. But if you're curious about changing your morning ritual, Guayusa is an interesting alternative worth exploring.
What Is Guayusa?
Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a caffeinated holly tree native to the upper Amazon region and strongly associated with Ecuador. Its leaves have a long history of traditional use among Kichwa communities, including as an early-morning infusion.
Guayusa vs Coffee: What's Actually Different?
Both drinks contain caffeine, and the amount in your cup depends on the product and preparation. Coffee generally has a roasted, bold flavour, while Guayusa is brewed from leaves and tastes smoother, earthy and gently vegetal.
Guayusa also contains naturally occurring plant compounds including theobromine and polyphenols. People sometimes describe the subjective experience of Guayusa differently from coffee, but caffeine affects everyone differently, so claims such as “no jitters” or “no crash” shouldn't be treated as guarantees.
Flavour
Guayusa is smooth and earthy with a clean finish. Many people find it less bitter than coffee, green tea or yerba mate. It can be enjoyed plain, with honey and lemon, or brewed strong and poured over ice.
The People Behind the Leaf
Guayusa has deep cultural roots in Ecuadorian Amazon communities. Upina's Guayusa is sourced from Ecuador, and our goal is to share the leaf in a way that respects its origins while offering Canadians a fresh loose-leaf product.
How to Brew Guayusa
- Use 1–2 teaspoons of loose-leaf Guayusa per cup.
- Heat water to about 90–95°C.
- Steep for 5–8 minutes.
- Strain and enjoy hot or over ice.
Is Guayusa Right for You?
If you enjoy caffeine but want to explore a different flavour and morning ritual, Guayusa is easy to try. You don't need to give up coffee — many people simply enjoy both.
