How to Brew Guayusa Tea: Hot, Iced & Cold Brew
Share
Guayusa is a naturally caffeinated leaf from the Amazon region of South America. Its smooth flavour makes it easy to prepare hot, iced or as a cold brew.
How much Guayusa should you use?
A good starting point is 1–2 teaspoons of loose-leaf Guayusa for every 8 oz (250 ml) of water. Adjust the amount to suit your taste and caffeine preference.
How to brew hot Guayusa
- Heat fresh water to about 90–95°C.
- Add 1–2 teaspoons of loose-leaf Guayusa per cup.
- Steep for 5–8 minutes.
- Strain and enjoy on its own or with lemon, honey or your favourite additions.
How to make iced Guayusa
Brew Guayusa slightly stronger than usual, allow it to cool, then pour it over ice. Lemon, lime, mint and a little honey all pair beautifully with its naturally smooth flavour.
How to cold brew Guayusa
Add loose-leaf Guayusa to cold water and refrigerate overnight. Strain the leaves in the morning and serve chilled. Cold brewing is an easy way to prepare a larger batch ahead of time.
Can Guayusa be steeped longer?
Yes. Guayusa is often appreciated for being less bitter and astringent than many other caffeinated drinks, so experimenting with a longer steep can produce a stronger cup without the flavour becoming overly harsh.
