Guayusa, Caffeine & Energy: What the Research Really Says
Share
Guayusa is naturally caffeinated, which means it can increase alertness just as other caffeinated drinks can. What makes it interesting is that researchers have begun studying whether compounds in Guayusa influence the body's response to caffeine.
The research is promising, but it is still limited. Guayusa should not be described as guaranteed to prevent jitters, anxiety or an energy crash.
What a Human Study Found
A randomized, double-blind crossover trial compared 200 mg of caffeine delivered as Guayusa leaf extract, green coffee extract and synthetic caffeine in 12 healthy adult men.
Caffeine exposure from the three sources was broadly comparable. In that small study, the Guayusa extract produced a significantly smaller increase in epinephrine than synthetic caffeine, while changes in heart rate and blood pressure were not significantly different between the sources.
That is an interesting finding, but the study was small, used standardized extracts rather than a normal brewed cup of Guayusa, and was not designed to prove that Guayusa prevents subjective “jitters” or a later caffeine crash.
What About Guayusa's Other Compounds?
Guayusa also contains naturally occurring plant compounds including theobromine, chlorogenic acids and other polyphenols. Chemical analyses and scientific reviews have reported additional compounds in Guayusa, but their amounts can vary with the plant material and preparation.
Researchers are still working out whether these compounds meaningfully change the experience of caffeine in a typical brewed serving.
Why People Compare Guayusa With Coffee
The biggest everyday differences are easier to describe: Guayusa comes from a leaf rather than a roasted coffee bean, has a smooth earthy flavour, and can be brewed at different strengths. Many drinkers personally describe the experience as different from coffee, but individual caffeine sensitivity, dose, sleep, food intake and brewing method all matter.
The Takeaway
There is early evidence that Guayusa extract may produce a different epinephrine response than an equivalent dose of synthetic caffeine, but the evidence is not strong enough to promise “no jitters” or “no crash.” The more defensible reason to try Guayusa is simple: it is a distinctive naturally caffeinated Ecuadorian leaf with its own flavour, tradition and brewing ritual.
